Four things to settle
Planning a trip here comes down to four decisions: when to come, how to get here, what to bring and book before you leave home, and what paperwork you need at the border.
None of them is difficult. All four go wrong in the same way, which is that people settle them in the wrong order. Flights get booked before anyone checks what the river is doing, and by then the month is fixed and so is what you can do in it.
So take them in this order. Each has its own page, and each is written by people who live three kilometres from the Falls rather than by a marketing department.

The Zambezi is eight times bigger in April than in October, over the same rock, in the same year. That single fact decides what your trip can be: whether you raft, whether you swim at the lip, whether you see the Falls or the weather they make. Month by month, with the numbers.

Everything else on this list can be fixed later. A visa can be applied for, a bag can be repacked, a transfer can be rearranged at an hour’s notice. The month you arrive cannot be changed once the tickets are bought, and the month decides more here than at most places on earth.
If rafting is the point of the trip, or Devil’s Pool, or the biggest water you have ever seen, those are three different months. Get that right and the rest is detail.
